1850s-1870s
Imagine yourself on a nineteenth-century commercial street. Hotels, taverns and shops line both sides of the bustling road. This was Sussex Drive before the National Capital Commission (NCC). To create a ceremonial route from Rideau Hall (F17) to the Parliament Buildings (A3) for visiting royalty and the governor general, the NCC purchased, leased and rehabilitated buildings along the drive. It was promoted in the early 1960s as the "Mile of History," and is now known as Confederation Boulevard.
541 Sussex Drive, once home to the NCC's Design and Construction Division, is an impressive Classical Revival building that began as the British Hotel (James Skead 1853) and later became the Clarendon Hotel. Before Confederation, it was a barracks and then a temporary art gallery, a museum and the offices of the Geological Survey of Canada. The establishment of the National Gallery of Canada (B7) in 1880 superseded the small gallery, while the Geological Survey of Canada's collection evolved into the Canadian Museum of Nature (C13) and the Canadian Museum of History (14). Beyond an addition on George Street, through an archway, lies an attractive walled courtyard with restaurants.
