    Notes:

    DESJARDINS \emdash La rue Dalhousie, dans la Basse ville d'Ottawa, conserve peu de commerces canadiens-français. Cependant, quelques-uns sont installés dans cette artère très achalandée depuis plusieurs décennies. Telle est la pharmacie Desjardins, à l'angle de Dalhousie et Clarence.

    Avant le début de ce siècle, un Dr Voligny sur qui j'ai peu d'informations, était propriétaire de cette pharmacie qui fut achetée par Thomas Payment, maire d'Ottawa pendant une période de sérieuses conflagrations dont celle du grand feu de 1900. (voir page 302, Tome IV).

    M. Payment mourut en 1920. Quelques années plus tard, Horace Desjardins, né dans la Basse-Ville en 1893, en devint le propriétaire. Rappelons que le père d'Horace employé au Parlement fédéral, perdit la vie dans l'incendie spectaculaire de l'édifice en février 1916.

    Horace Desjardins épousa Marie-Louise Boyle née en 1896. Le couple eut quatre enfants: Jean-Paul (Liliane Charette), Jacqueline (Robert Bélanger), Yolande (Rhéal Boudreau) et Louis-Marcel (Yvonne Peters). La famille habitait le logis au-dessus de la pharmacie, rue Clarence. La générosité, l'humour et un sens très aigu de ses devoirs envers ses concitoyens caractérisaient la personnalité de M. Horace Desjardins qui après soixante-deux ans consacrés à une carrière bien remplie, prit sa retraite en 1980 et mourut en 1986 à l'âge de 93 ans. Son fils Jean-Paul avait pris la relève à la pharmacie et Louis, petit-fils d'Horace, a également adopté cette carrière.

    Le commerce a maintenant deux pharmacies: rue Dalhousie et au Centre des sciences de la santé.

    – Horace Desjardins, pharmacien –

    Fils d’Alphonse Desjardins, une des victimes du feu survenu au Parlement du Canada en 1916, Horace Desjardins naît à Ottawa le 22 avril 1893. Il fait ses études à l’École Guigues, à l’Université d’Ottawa, au Collège de Nominingue et au Séminaire de philosophie de Montréal. Il s’enrôle dans la Marine royale canadienne durant les dernières années de la Première Guerre mondiale. Diplômé de l’Université de Toronto en pharmacie en 1923, il achète trois ans plus tard la pharmacie de Thomas Payment, rue Dalhousie, à Ottawa. Il prend sa retraite comme pharmacien vers 1973, mais il continue de travailler à la pharmacie jusqu’en 1980. Au fil des ans, Horace Desjardins est président de l’Amicale Guigues, président d’un cercle local de l’Association catholique de la jeunesse canadienne, membre fondateur du Club de raquetteurs d’Iberville et membre à vie de l’Institut canadien-français d’Ottawa. Également membre de plusieurs associations religieuses, il manifeste une grande générosité envers les communautés religieuses. Marié à Marie-Louise Boyle (1896-1990) et père de quatre enfants, il meurt à Ottawa le 6 mai 1986 à l’âge de 93 ans.
